About Pigeon Spikes
London Pigeon Spike Control
You have probably seen pigeon spikes used before but haven't noticed them but they are installed on buildings all over London. They are about 30-50cm long with spikes that protrude up from the base about 10-12cm to prevent pigeons from landing on any surface they are installed on. With the ever-increasing pigeon problem in London, more and more people are being affected by them and are looking for ways to prevent them from becoming a nuisance. Not all pigeon spikes are created equal and it is important the correct spikes are selected in order to have the maximum effect against pigeons. There are many different types of spikes for sale but we only use the highest-quality spikes available on the market. All of our spike installations are carried out using high-grade stainless spikes with a UV stabilised Poly Carbonate plastic base that will not go brittle over time like some of the cheaper alternatives on the market. Anti-Pigeon Spikes should only be installed using a high-quality silicone adhesive that will not shrink or deteriorate over time.

Where can you use anti-pigeon spikes
Windowsill and ledges – Pigeons love sitting on window ledges and can cause an unsightly mess. Pigeon spikes installed here can eliminate the problem

Flooding issues – Gutters are another place pigeons perch on and their fouling can quickly block up the downpipes causing damage to the walls of a building and cause dampness. Luckily we can spike gutters with our special gutter clips.

Under balconies – Pigeons have found that the metal beams that are used in the construction of balconies offer excellent protection from the elements. Spiking these beams can prevent them from perching here.

Leading edges – Pigeons like to perch up on the edge of high buildings as it gives them an excellent view of the area below and this often results in them fouling down the front of the building and causing a mess.

Waste pipes – Waste pipes usually placed at the side of a property offer protection against the rain and pigeons like to perch on often fouling on the ground below causing a trip hazard. Spikes installed correctly can prevent this.

Shop signs – Shops signs and canopies are a favourite with pigeons as they offer suitable nesting sites s a lot of signs have lots of gaps behind them. Spiking works wonders in these situations and can be fitted with ease once the cleaning has been done.

Frequently asked questions about Pigeon Spikes

I don't want to harm the pigeons but at the same time i want to keep them away. Will the spikes hurt the pigeons?

Pigeon spikes are designed to deter pigeons without causing harm to them. The spikes work by creating an uncomfortable surface that discourages pigeons from landing or roosting on the protected areas. The spikes have blunt ends, and their purpose is to make it difficult for pigeons to find a stable surface to perch on, rather than causing injury.

When installed properly and according to manufacturer guidelines, pigeon spikes should not harm pigeons. They are designed with the bird’s safety in mind, and the spikes are spaced in a way that prevents birds from getting their feet caught or injured. The goal is to create an effective deterrent while maintaining the birds’ well-being.

It’s important to note that proper installation is crucial to ensure the spikes are securely attached and aligned correctly. Regular inspections and maintenance should also be conducted to ensure the spikes remain in good condition and continue to function as intended.

Which type of spikes are better to install, the ones which are made of steel or the plastic spikes?

Plastic is a cheaper alternative to stainless steel and although can last a long time will eventually go brittle and snap off.  Stainless steel is the professional choice and once installed will last many many years.

Why do spikes come in different sizes?

Pigeon spikes come in different sizes to accommodate the varying needs and characteristics of different areas and surfaces. Here are a few reasons why spikes come in different sizes:

  1. Surface width: Different surfaces have different widths, such as ledges, beams, window sills, or signs. Pigeon spikes are available in different sizes to match the width of these surfaces. Spikes should cover the entire width of the area to effectively prevent pigeons from landing or roosting.
  2. Coverage area: Some areas may require more extensive coverage than others. Larger spikes can cover a broader area, which can be beneficial when dealing with wider ledges or rooflines where pigeons are landing or perching in significant numbers.
  3. Bird species: Different bird species have different foot sizes and behaviours. Spikes of varying sizes are designed to target specific bird species, including pigeons. Smaller spikes may be effective in deterring smaller birds, while larger spikes can deter larger birds as well.
  4. Flexibility and customization: Different sizes of spikes allow for flexibility and customization to fit specific architectural features or irregular surfaces. This enables the spikes to adapt to the contours and dimensions of the area, ensuring effective coverage.

When selecting the size of pigeon spikes, it is important to consider the dimensions of the area you want to protect, the bird species you are targeting, the visual impact you desire, and any specific customization requirements. Working with bird control specialists or professionals can help you determine the appropriate size of spikes for your specific situation and ensure optimal effectiveness in deterring pigeons.

Once installed how long will the spikes last?

The lifespan of pigeon spikes can vary depending on several factors, including the quality of the spikes, environmental conditions, and the level of maintenance they receive. On average, high-quality pigeon spikes can last for several years, typically ranging from 5 to 10 years or even longer.

Here are some factors that can impact the longevity of pigeon spikes:

  1. Material quality: The quality of the spikes’ materials plays a significant role in their durability. Higher-quality spikes made from sturdy materials, such as stainless steel or UV-resistant plastics, tend to have a longer lifespan compared to lower-quality alternatives.
  2. Environmental conditions: The exposure to weather elements can affect the lifespan of pigeon spikes. Constant exposure to sunlight, rain, wind, and extreme temperatures can lead to gradual wear and degradation. Spikes installed in harsher climates or areas with high UV exposure may experience faster deterioration.
  3. Installation quality: Proper installation is crucial for the long-term performance of pigeon spikes. Well-installed spikes that are securely fixed to the surface and aligned correctly are less likely to experience premature failure or damage.

While these factors provide a general idea of pigeon spike lifespan, it’s important to note that the actual longevity can vary based on the specific circumstances and conditions.

If you have specific concerns or questions about the lifespan of pigeon spikes, it is advisable to consult with bird control specialists or professionals who can provide insights based on their experience and expertise.

How will I know if pigeons spikes are right for my pigeon problem?

To determine if pigeon spikes are the right solution for your pigeon problem, you can consider the following factors:

  1. Pigeon Behavior: Pigeon spikes are effective at deterring pigeons from landing on ledges, rooftops, and other surfaces. If your pigeon problem is primarily related to pigeons perching or roosting on specific areas, such as window sills or building ledges, then spikes can be an appropriate solution.
  2. Location: Assess the areas where pigeons are causing issues. Pigeon spikes are commonly installed on flat surfaces, such as ledges, beams, and signs. If the pigeons are primarily targeting specific perching spots, spikes can help prevent them from landing and roosting in those areas.
  3. Aesthetics: Consider the visual impact of pigeon spikes on the building or structure. Pigeon spikes are visible and may alter the appearance of the affected areas. If aesthetics are a concern, you may want to explore other deterrent options that are less visually prominent.
  4. Consultation: If you’re unsure about the most suitable solution for your specific pigeon problem, it can be helpful to consult with a pest control professional or bird control specialist. They can assess the situation, provide recommendations tailored to your needs, and help you make an informed decision.

By considering these factors and potentially seeking expert advice, you can determine if pigeon spikes are a suitable option for addressing your specific pigeon problem.

Where are pigeon spikes typically installed?

Pigeon spikes are typically installed in areas where pigeons tend to perch, roost, or land. Common locations for installing pigeon spikes include:

  1. Ledges: Pigeons often favour ledges, such as window sills, rooftop edges, and building ledges, as perching spots. Pigeon spikes can be installed along the length of the ledge to prevent pigeons from landing or roosting.
  2. Beams and Pipes: Pigeons may also land on exposed beams, pipes, or other elevated surfaces. Installing spikes on these structures can deter pigeons from perching or nesting on them.
  3. Signage and Billboards: Pigeons are attracted to the top of signs and billboards, making them potential spots for installing pigeon spikes. Spikes can be attached to the upper edges or corners of the signs to discourage pigeons from landing.
  4. Chimneys and Ventilation Systems: Pigeons may attempt to access chimneys or ventilation systems, causing potential issues. Installing spikes around these openings can prevent pigeons from entering and nesting in these areas.
  5. Rooftops and Solar Panels: Pigeons may land and perch on rooftops, including those with solar panels. Installing spikes along the edges of rooftops or around solar panel arrays can help deter pigeons from these areas.

It’s important to identify the specific areas where pigeons are causing problems and install the spikes accordingly. The spikes are typically designed to be easily attached to different surfaces using adhesive, screws, or other mounting methods.

I own a property in London that has had an ongoing issue with Bedbugs. We have had other pest control treatments in the past and none have worked. I called the Pied Piper late on Friday afternoon and was given a price on the spot with an information sheet for how my tenants needed to prepare the property. We were advised that it would take 3 treatments as the infestation was really bad. We have now had all the 3 treatments and 8 weeks on we are still clear. Fantastic service at a great price. From the ladies who answer the phone to the technician who carried out the treatment the service was second to none.
