The pharaoh ant, whose origins are unknown, has now been introduced to almost every area of the world, which shows how successful this insect is at adapting to its environment.

Pharaoh ants love sweet and protein-rich foods which could spell disaster if you have a bakery or process food which the ants would be more likely to quickly infest and contaminate.

Using an insecticide against pharaoh ants will only make the problem worse, as it will only kill the workers and not the queens, who will then produce more satellite nests in order to increase their numbers.

Unlike garden ants, pharaoh ants have multiple queens, and when the nest is large enough, one queen leaves with some of the workers and starts another satellite nest.

Pharaoh ants used to be found in the UK in hospitals and blocks of flats where the communal heating systems were ideal conditions for them. Nowadays pharaoh ants are found all over the UK in every type of building and property.

The queens are larger in length than the workers and males. They have a large head with slightly bent antennae and black eyes. The males will have wings which are a pale yellow, and for this reason can be difficult to see. However, queens are larger and darker in colour.

Breeding pattern: The queen can typically lay eggs in batches of 10 to 12 at a time, but can produce up to 3500 eggs in a lifetime. The eggs that are produced take up to 42 days to mature from egg to adult. Each queen within the nest lives between 90-365 days.

The pharaoh ant is a tropical species of ant, apparently only found in heated buildings in the UK. However, we have found these ants outside of heated buildings on housing estates and in and around hospitals, which demonstrates how intelligent these insects are. In the event of a threat, workers ants can quickly move pupae and young larvae away from the original colony. This response to danger can be triggered if, for example, you use an insecticide to spray the trails or nests of ants which causes them to bud and create satellite nests. Budding is a known process by which the ants gradually spread throughout buildings or complexes as the colonies get bigger.

How do you know you have pharaoh ants?

You will see live evidence of pharaoh ants in and around areas where sugary and protein based foods are kept or served.

Pharaoh ants can be difficult to see as they are light brown in colour and are very tiny so you will need to look very carefully.

In a kitchen they will congregate around a water source or foods like honey or icing sugar. You will also find them in food cupboards foraging around.

You may get complaints from customers who have been served food with ants on it or seen them on counters or tables in your business.

Insecticide sprays will only eliminate the worker ants and cause the nest to bud and spread over a longer period of time.
